NIGHTSHIFT 100% Kentucky Bluegrass Seed is the same premium KBG blend growing in my Lawn Life front lawn featured throughout my YouTube channel.

Made with 40% Mazama, 40% Everest, and 20% Bluebank Kentucky Bluegrass, I created this blend after spending countless hours going through NTEP data looking for the traits I wanted most in my own lawn: exceptionally dark genetic color, outstanding shade performance for KBG, strong disease resistance, excellent turf quality, density, and self-repair.

These are the exact cultivars I chose for my own front lawn—and despite the level of genetics in the bag, NIGHTSHIFT is priced far below comparable elite, named-cultivar KBG blends.

WHY I CHOSE THESE CULTIVARS

40% Mazama Kentucky Bluegrass

Mazama stood out for its combination of dark genetic color, turf quality, disease performance, and exceptional shade tolerance.

Its performance in NTEP shade testing was one of the biggest reasons I chose it. In the 2015 NTEP Kentucky bluegrass shade trial in Carbondale, Illinois, Mazama recorded a 6.5 mean turf-quality rating, the highest mean in the trial.

For a residential lawn where sunlight can change dramatically from one area to another, that was a huge selling point for me.

40% Everest Kentucky Bluegrass

Everest brings dark color, excellent density, strong shade performance, and outstanding resistance to a wide range of common turf diseases.

It gave me another high-performing set of genetics that complemented Mazama extremely well.

20% Bluebank Kentucky Bluegrass

Bluebank adds dark genetic color, turf quality, density, durability, and strong disease resistance, including excellent resistance to dollar spot.

Together, the three cultivars give the blend genetic diversity without sacrificing the characteristics I wanted most in my lawn.

WHY THIS BLEND?

I wasn't looking for the darkest grass on paper and ignoring everything else.

I wanted a 100% Kentucky bluegrass lawn that could combine:

• Very dark genetic color

• Outstanding partial-shade performance for KBG

• Strong disease resistance

• Dense, fine-textured turf

• Excellent turf quality

• Rhizomatous spreading and self-repair

No Kentucky bluegrass is immune to disease or ideal for extremely deep shade. But cultivar genetics matter, and I chose this blend specifically to perform well across the conditions found in real residential lawns.

WHY 100% KENTUCKY BLUEGRASS?

Kentucky bluegrass spreads through underground stems called rhizomes, which allow an established lawn to gradually fill thin areas and repair damage.

It's a great choice for homeowners looking for a dense, fine-textured, premium cool-season lawn with excellent striping and the ability to spread and recover over time.

The tradeoff is establishment speed. KBG typically takes longer to germinate and establish than perennial ryegrass, so good seed-to-soil contact and consistent moisture are especially important.
